  100 words on the first time I saw Dave Dub and why The Treatment is an important historical record

  It was a spring day in 1995 I believe. A murmur was circulating through the SJ underground that DJ Premier’s disciples Group Home were going to performing at a dusty bar on the outskirts of town. Though most of didn’t know each other then every Hip Hop head within a 20 mile radius crowded into this tiny bar. The opening act was a this grungy looking cat with a Jimi Hendrix t-shirt on calling himself Dave Dub. Like most rappers I was immediately skeptical but by the time Dave was four bars into his first song ‘Superfly’ I knew there was something different about this dude. Witty off the wall lyricism spoken with a definitive west coast drawl complemented by the bangin’ sound scape created by Tape Master Steph. Over the years I have gotten to know Dave and Tape Master Steph so i’m proud to see some of their best works released to the world via Stonesthrow Records. The Treatment is not only testament to the timeless brand of music they created (the lead single Super Fly is over 15 years old!) but a lasting document of San Jose Hip Hop’s golden era. SALUTE!
